Outdoor Maths: Leeds Mathematics Trail

Introduction

Maths trails have great potential for learning and experiencing mathematics outdoors and getting fit at the same time. Trails can provide great opportunities for mathematical talk, group and collaborative work. They create natural links with many other subjects and are inherently cross curricular.

Description

The Leeds Mathematics Trail was originally devised by PGCE lecturers and students at Leeds University. Over the years it has been modified and kept up to date by current PGCE students.

The trail begins at the Parish Church and Corn Exchange and then goes through the middle of Leeds shopping area and ends at the Leeds City Market. We think this is the best way to complete it.

However, it is possible to start it from any point on the trail, and indeed to complete it in shorter sessions.

All one needs to have a go at completing the trail are the maths trail booklet and a pen or pencil to answer the questions. It’s fun to do on your own or with friends. It is suitable for a wide range of ages from upper primary to adults. Why not have a go at it if you are in Leeds? See this part of Leeds and do some maths as you walk around. And if any other mathematical questions spring to mind note them down and email them to us for inclusion in the maths trail.
